Location
Rokiškis district municipality is located in the north-eastern part of Panevėžys county, at the border with Latvia, on the Aukštaičiai Plateau. The municipality is adorned with small hills and lakes, the biggest and the most beautiful river in the district – the Nemunėlis. There are 99 lakes (the largest whereof – Sartai, Obeliai, Apvalasai, Vyžuona, Skaistė), 11 ponds. Agricultural land makes up 56 %, forests – 28 %, roads – 2 %, built-up area – 2.3 %, water bodies – 3.8 %, other land – 7.9 % of the municipality.
There are three towns – Obeliai, Pandėlys, Rokiškis, and nine townships – Čedasai, Duokiškis, Juodupė, Jūžintai, Kamajai, Panemunėlis, Panemunis, Salos and Suvainiškis, 689 villages.
The district is crossed by a railway from Daugavpils to Šiauliai, Panevėžys and Kaunas. The distance to Vilnius is 180 km, to Kaunas – 175 km, to Ryga – 160 km and to Klaipėda – 360 km. There are recreational sites equipped by the most beautiful water bodies, the most beloved whereof – Sartai Lake (the longest lake in Lithuania).
There are four state-protected natural heritage objects: Ožakmenis, Bradesiai oak, Ministras (Minister’s) linden and Žiūkeliškės oak. There are about 230 historical and cultural monuments: the churches of St Francis Seraphic (18th century) in Aleksandravėlė, St Michael the Archangel in Jūžintai and Rokiškis, St Casimir in Kamajai, Panemunis, Salos manors, caste mounds (those of Alksniai, Stasiūnai).
